Alette Schoon is a senior lecturer at the School of Journalism and Media Studies at Rhodes University in Makhanda, South Africa. She runs DigiMethods Africa, a project dedicated to expanding digital and computational research methods to African institutions and has most recently organised a hackathon around this topic. Her research interests include the documentary filmmaking industry, mobile and digital cultures, digital inequality, science communication, scams as disinformation, anti-scamming practices and digital methods for researching the media. She is an executive member of the Digital Humanities Association of South Africa and the Documentary Filmmakers' Association of South Africa. Alette has a PhD in Media Studies from the University of Cape Town and an undergraduate degree in Mathematics and Applied Mathematics from the University of Pretoria.
