Andrea L. Guzman is an associate professor of communication at Northern Illinois University, USA. She has been fundamental in formalizing Human-Machine Communication research and supporting its international growth within communication and media studies. She has been ranked in the top 2% of Scientists in the Field of Communication & Media Studies by Stanford/Elsevier in 2023 and 2024. Her research focuses on people’s interactions with and perceptions of various forms of artificial intelligence, including voice-based assistants and generative AI applications, and the implications of AI adoption across different sectors of society. As a former journalist, Guzman also examines the integration of AI into journalism and media industries. As an educator for nearly two decades, she has been helping faculty, administrators, and students navigate the pedagogical and ethical implications of AI in the classroom. Guzman is lead editor of The SAGE Handbook of Human-Machine Communication and editor of Human-Machine Communication: Rethinking Communication, Technology, and Ourselves. Guzman’s research has been published in top journals, including New Media & Society, Computers in Human Behavior, and Digital Journalism, and has been presented at leading interdisciplinary and disciplinary conferences worldwide. Guzman is currently co-authoring a book critically examining voice assistants for Polity.
