Dr. Gutiérrez holds a PhD from the Complutense University of Madrid and is a journalist with a degree in Social Communication from UCSC, Chile. He is a Research Professor at the Faculty of Communications at the Universidad del Desarrollo, Chile. His current academic and professional memberships include:

  • Vice Co-Chair of the Law Section of the International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR)
  • Active member of the Ethics Group of IAMCR
  • Member of Group 18 on Ethics of the Latin American Association of Communication Researchers (ALAIC)
  • Member and coordinator of the Regulation and Public Policy Group of INCOM Chile (Chilean Trade Association of Communication Researchers)
  • Member of the Media Ethics Council, a body of the Chilean Media Federation (ANP, ANATEL, and ARCHI)
  • Member of the Complutense Observatory of Disinformation (Complutense University of Madrid)
  • Principal researcher at the Chilean Observatory of Disinformation (one of four)
  • His lines of research address the right to information, disinformation, information disorders, professional ethics (including compliance and regulatory frameworks), and journalistic ethics. In addition, he studies the transformations of journalistic work in the new information environment.
