Wijayanto is an assistant professor on Digital Politics and Democracy in the Government Study Program, Diponegoro University. He obtained his Ph.D degree from Leiden University in 2019. Recently, he has been elected as the chairperson of the presidium for national civil society coalition on Democratization and Moderation of Indonesian Cyber Sphere (Koalisi Damai) from 2023 to 2027. He has published numerous works on mass media, digital politics and democracy in Indonesia. His latest article entitled Cyber Terror, the Academic Anti-corruption Movement and Indonesian Democratic Regression, published in Contemporary Southeast Asia in April 2022 co-authored with Fiona Suwana and Nur Hidayat Sardini. At the same year, he wrote a book co-authored with Yatun Sastramidjaja entitled Cyber troops, online manipulation of public opinion and co-option of Indonesia's cyber sphere published by ISEAS Yusof Ishak Institute, Singapore. Also in 2022, he published several articles in the special issues on Inside Indonesia about cyber troops and social media propaganda in which he co-authored with among others: Ward Berenschot, Yatun Sastramidjaja and Ismail Fahmi. Meanwhile, also in the same year, his short article entitled, The Rise of Digital Citizenship amidst Indonesia democratic regression appeared in Politika, Paris.In the meantime, he is involved in three main research projects on Indonesian digital politics and democracy. The first is a project on cyber troops and social media propaganda in Southeast Asian countries comparing Indonesia, Thailand, and Philippine together with, among others: Ward Berenschot (KITLV/UVA) and Yatun Sastramidjaja (UVA) funded by NWO, the Netherlands from 2023-2024. This project is actually a follow up a pilot-research on cyber troops and social media propaganda in Indonesia which he initiated with Ward Berenschot, Yatun Sastramidjaja, and Ismail Fahmi (Drone Emprit) conducted from 2020-2022. He currently also leads a research project on the conversation on gender norms among urban millennials in Indonesian social media together with Retna Hanani (Diponegoro University), Nurul Hasfi (Diponegoro University) and Ismail Fahmi funded by DFAT, Australia from 2022-2023. Finally, he acts as chairperson on the research project entitled “Internet, Civil Society, and Democracy: Revisiting the Use of Internet by Indonesian Civil Society's Organization's For Promoting Democracy� from 2022 to 2025 in collaboration with SAFEnet, Indonesia.
