University of the Witwatersrand

Zimkhitha Manyana is a lecturer in International Relations at the University of the Witwatersrand and holds a PhD in Political Science from the University of Johannesburg. He has designed and taught courses on foreign policy, international political economy, diplomatic engagement, and research methods. His doctoral research, Technologies of Accountability: Digitalisation and Institutionalised Transparency in South Africa’s Parliament since 2019, introduces the “Institutionalised Onus” framework, which uses Mechanism Design Theory and interpretable machine learning to enhance public engagement, monitor executive compliance, and strengthen democratic accountability.

As co-founder of the 4IR Digital Policy Research Unit (4DPRU), Manyana works extensively on digital policy and governance. His publications span topics including fake news, political party futures thinking, Russia–Southern Africa arms trade, and digital clientelism in African elections. Beyond academia, he consults on South Africa’s political landscape for global organisations and served as lead writer for the South African Parliament’s 6th Legacy Report and its 30-year review, reflecting his broader commitment to understanding the intersections of governance, technology, and international affairs.
