Laura Joyner is a Research Fellow in the Department of Psychology at Middlesex University (UK). She completed her PhD at the University of Westminster in 2023. Her PhD thesis, "Why Do People Spread Disinformation on Social Media? The Role of Social Identity and Perceived Morality, looked at whether moral leniency towards belief and ingroup affirming disinformation and misinformation helped to explain users' digital micro-contributions towards its further spread (e.g. through likes, shares, etc). Prior to retraining in psychology, Laura spent seven years working in public relations and digital marketing. It was during this time she became interested in how people interact with technology and their behaviour online. Currently, she is employed on a project looking at whether smart surveillance technologies (including the use of Artificial intelligence) can be effective at preventing suicides at high-risk locations.
